Preparing for the Future Harvest

Farming for our soil, livelihood, and community.”

21st FHCASA Annual Conference, 2020

We went to the 21st annual Future Harvest CASA conference to learn about farming. We went to find out about resources to grow food and flowers and grow a business. We came to connect with a community interested in sustainable and clean living.

We did all this, but more importantly, we walked away with a greater appreciation and understanding of the work we are doing, why we are doing it, and its impact on our health, for the earth, and for the future. Our family history with the land is complicated. It fed us, but it was also what bound us. Our historical knowledge of the land was used against us and exploited. What sustained us for centuries became a source of skepticism and animosity for recent generations. (https://haciendabarrera.com/going-back-to-our-roots/)

As we continue to evolve – from our beginning as a small backyard garden – we want to keep a sense of purpose in all we do. Going forward, we will make sure to honor our past and challenge the status quo, and foster a future where we do not fear the land and can contribute with dignity to the food system.
