No Place Like Home

Living in Accokeek, MD is like no other place I’ve lived. It is quaint, historic, preserved (The Moyaone Reserve), and even it’s rocky roads are naturally beautiful. Let me not forget about its residents, they are creative and appreciate nature.

At a time when keeping away six feet apart from others (social distancing), our neighborhood provides a sense of safety. Our walks or strolls may seem monotonous, however, the beauty of nature is always changing and the creativity from our neighbors keep my almost-four-year-old excited to go out and about.

While some days you’ll see a neighbor walking their horse and other days you’ll hear a rooster crow from next door, life in The Moyaone is for many a dream come true. It is spacious, quiet, the stars shine bright at night, however, this environment is not everybody’s cup of tea.

As a bronxite, New Yorker, I am slowly but surely adjusting to my home away from home. We hope our son learns to appreciate nature as much as we do now as adults.

Here are a few ways you can teach your children to appreciate nature or as some may say, God’s gift to us.
*Encourage children to play outdoors
*Dig and plant seeds or trees
*Take walks in your neighborhood
*Observe surroundings, wildlife, sounds
*Participate in Earth Day and Wild Life Appreciation days.

While not all of us have the luxury to drive to our neighborhood during these times, I invite you to add Accokeek on your list of places to visit. While in the area make sure you add the following:

Rest assure when all of this is over, your senses will thank you for the sights, smells and sounds of nature.

Here are a few stories to check out before your visit. Enjoy!

  1. I love this, thanks. Would you mind if I shared it? My family and I have lived here for 33 years (ex-Long Island gal).

I sell real estate mostly in the Moyaone and this really captures the essence of life here.
