Sometimes, I wonder how much we would do if we were not afraid of failure, rejection or to take that leap of faith. Whether it’s doubt or non-confidence, it somewhat knows how to creep up on me sometimes. This week was certainly the test week. We are five months into growing and cultivating at the farm and we see the fruits of our labor across our backyard. From flowers to herbs and veggies, the garden is thriving and we decided to take that big leap into making flower arrangements for a DC evening reception (the National LATINA Symposium).
First of all, I was nervous. Why? Because it was the first time to make flower arrangements for a cocktail reception that would host 60 to 80 guests. The questions of what time should we cut the flowers, where do we store them, how to store them, at what temperature — all of these at once made me nervous and second guess myself. But thanks to the support of my husband and brother, who has helped at the farm for the past month, I started gaining some confidence. Little did I know that my brother would have some awesome eye and patience to help with the arrangements.
Before delivering the arrangements we sought online for some guidance and prepared what we needed for the big day. Vases, green foam, scissors, paper, etc. Still a bit nervous, we made it happen. With the encouraging words of my brother who kept saying: “They’ll look great”, “you’ll see they will look awesome” I felt more confident. Once the arrangements were done, the three of us were in awe of how beautiful they looked. We mixed zinnias with lisianthus, artemisia and globe amaranth in one vase.
It took a big leap of faith to make it happen, but we did it.
Time for delivery – oh boy was this another story. I arrived with my basket full of arrangements and showed the CEO and his wife, once I opened the basket, she loved the smell of the artemisia. To make the long story short- they loved the arrangements and were set on the tables. They were finally at their destination. From attendees to co-workers to the CEO, everyone enjoyed the fragrant artemisia and the colorful blooms.
