This past September, we dove in and ventured out to participate in the Maryland Poultry Swap & Farmers Market. Did we know what to expect? No. Did we learn from the experience? Yes.
Truth be told, I had never heard of a poultry swap, much less been to one before last year when they were in the area. From chickens to goats and other livestock, the event drew crowds that included other farmers and crafters, and us – a combination of flowers, veggies, herbs, and crafts.
I recently learned that historically, poultry swap meets were in rural locations, but as the trend of owning backyard poultry has gained popularity, poultry swaps are being held in urban and suburban locations too. To my surprise, the event seemed to be an outing for families since they were able to enjoy live music, food, and little ones had the chance to pet animals while there.
If you are interested in selling or buying at next year’s Maryland Poultry Swap check out their Facebook page for dates and details.
We also invite you to check out your local Poultry Swap events. You might just find a new family friend.
