Avocado Time

The first time my dad visited us at the farm he asked if we could and would grow avocados. I didn’t respond at the moment, however, I thought, ‘I guess we could, but should we’?

The third time, he asked the same question. I responded with “Will see, maybe someday,” Last October when visiting him in his 800 sq,-ft. apt. in NY, I noticed he had a few plants on the window sill, to my surprise, two of them were 8-inch tall avocados. He went on to show us he had another one on a cup, but he had already noticed it was not growing as fast as the other two. However, he was still proud of his avocados.

For probably the 10th time, my dad asked if we had some avocado ready on soil. I responded with “not yet” dad.  He smiled, pointed to the green leaves and said in Spanish, “Look, they are growing.”

Two months later, when we visited in December during the holidays the avocados were bigger and thriving. He pointed to the pot and encouraged us to grow some. According to him, it was easy.

Now that the holidays are over, we have some time to do a few things here and there. So I decided to give it a try. We bought a few Hass avocados from Aldi (they are yummy), took the seed out, peeled it, attached some toothpicks to the sides and set on water. Will they grow? I guess will have to wait to see what happens or like my dad says, “Uno nunca sabe, no cuesta nada hacer el intento.”

Thank you dad for being an inspiration,
